loveable

Let me start by saying.

That I just HATE drying time!!!!

Yesterday I came to the studio, Pulled out the scrap paper box, a canvas and elmer’s white glue. (okay puriest take your shots now) I didn’t use Goldens. It’s at home!!! So I glued a bunch of paper/card stock to the canvas then left. Waiting for it to dry. Did i say I hate drying time? I know necessary evil but, that doesn’t mean I have to like it. Does it? Ugh!!

So today with a million things to do and a trip planned for tomorrow I show up at the studio to utilize the unhappy office work portion..EWHHH!!! Not work. Yes the work portion.

Well its now 2:30 I finished my collage and haven’t got shit done for work.

All I can think about is packing an art travel kit!!!

So with paint, bubble wrap, fingers (always fingers) pastels oil base water soluable (the best kind) stamps, ink & some pens.

Here it is………

Okay? This was made for Izzy. My friends daughter who has spent the last 10 months in a rehab camp away from home. While she is much better and very ready to come home. I think a long path awaits her. This is only the start of the journey for her.

I want to give this as her homecoming present. So she will always remember that she is “loveable”

This art was inspired by the work of artist KellyRae Roberts. Her books, e courses and blog are all amazing. Her willingness to share her journey so openly and turning courage into action. Her success keeps the dream alive for so many of us. Go buy yourself something, here

Have a good day! Create something.

Art in the strangest places!

Okay so as many of you may or may not know I have become a parent in the last year. I have taken custody of my now 16 year old cousin. He has come with his more than his fair share of struggles. So as I attempt to parent, love and encourage him in new directions. I have found the silver lining to be the eye opening opportunities he provides. These come when I am seldom looking for them. Most often at the point of teenage rearing exasperation, somewhere between I love him and want to beat him. He in incredibly introspective which I have in common. As he has become more and more comfortable in our life together as a family & a household he has begun to share these insights with me.

So needless to say the tough weeks come & go for him, us maybe just life..
A few weeks ago he was especially down. I worry about depression, drug use, suicide when he gets this way. We had a long talk that night out back on the patio. As this is the spot where I sit. So maybe it safe feeling for him. I dont know.. He was saying how much his life sucked! How it was never going to get better and how much he hated EVERYTHING!!!!!! Well for me internally I was very scared. I know those feelings how devastating they can be an be all encompassing So, I told him to pick some goals & dreams. That I would support him whatever he chose as long as no drugs, period!
So the next few days around my house brought silence and sulking. I took a step back & just observed, sought counsel of other parents and waited. For what I don’t rightly know. Then it happened. He awoke with a plan. Some dreams some goals.
He proudly announced the things he had chosen, chest puffed out, slightly apprehensive here there are:
1. To be able to drive defensively to the basket at basketball.
2. To be able to dunk, slam it home.
3. To be the best world renown street artist.

The last one well it threw me. He got a D in art. Yes a f’ing D last year. So imagine my surprise.
So then we proceed to watch “Exit Through the Gift shop” if you haven’t seen this it is a movie about street art. But, after watching it has a completely other story attached to it. It’s a great movie.

So off we went to the paint/art store the next day. After blowing his budget on expensive spray paint & special tips. We drove home. His first question was ” how come Santa Barbara has no alleys?” I replied “Cause boys like you have spray paint!”

Well this started a whole new chapter in our lives a new dimension in our relationship and Street Art Revolution of America was born. Go to Facebook and
Ike the page.

So when I was in San Francisco the next week here is what I saw.

It’s a Banksy. He is world famous. His art has a great message. Usually political in nature. He isn’t actively on the web but you can find his work here if you look. I would call him a purist. Does not like the for profit part which has become senonomis with any art form that is Gaining popularity. Here is another Banksy the is now my iPad2 screen saver.

When you went to heaven you took my heart with you….

I made this Tuesday @ A Work of Heart in San Jose, Ca. It is a really fun to make piece. It turned out that my really old friend was killed not but a few weeks before. So this is what came to mind. “When you went to heaven You took my heart with you!” because it reminded me of the experience of losing him. The techniques:

Some are from the Chicago Retreat (Cloth, Paper Scissors). They are having another one!!!  The backround was paper afixed with Gel matte medium It is from Jane La Fazio’s class. I love this technique of taking pieces of paper & shredding them then arting them up…..

The heart is a carved piece of floral foam. Idea from Kelly Rae Roberts book Taking Flight. We then cover the floral foam & wire wings with plastic cast material. The wings came from the same book But, a differnt project.

I then stenciled the paper with paint & various other stamps , etc….. before attaching the heart with wings to the canvas…

FLAX – San Francisco

First Draft

Last night I was off early YES a wholesale miracle! I went to FLAX. Artist Heaven! They sell huge sheets of paper from Italy. As well as everything else under the sun. In my mind I have a vision of a piece of Art from the hand prints I made of my artist friend Jeff. He is a musician. He was looking at my art journal. He saw the pictures of my hands. So  I traced his very talented hands. He is a Guitar Player, Teacher & Lead vocalist in a band.

So my mind has been whirling with ideas for these very talented hands….

I was at Flax I saw some paper that was music notes and really cool writing on it. I bought it. I had a mapof the world which I am using as well as some Making Memories Rivets. I traced his hands with tracing paper then cut them out of musical paper, I washed them with a coffee stain. ( It’s a bean thing) I can’t explain it. Then I took a large sheet of thickest Watercolor paper a blue Tim Holtz Ranger Ink Pad I used Broken china and Weathered Wood. I washed like doing dishes with a little water, kitchen sponge and my ink pad this large sheet of paper. It looks like a cool sky effect I think I like it. I have temporarily placed the cut out hands & world on my page… Here is the beginning, First Layout of “These Talented Hands” I am awaiting lyrics from Jeff to add to the project.

I have been inspired by some collage art in the hallway at the Showcase House. As well as the courage to live by your gift with grace & gratitude.

Here is a little peek ….
